The Stelladaptor 2600 Controller to USB Interface allows the use of standard Atari 2600-compatible controllers, including joysticks, paddles, and driving controllers, with modern computers running Windows, Macintosh, or Linux operating systems. Any Atari 2600-compatible joystick, when plugged into your computer through the Stelladaptor, will behave as a normal joystick. This allows the use of classic Atari controllers with any software that will work with an 8-direction digital joystick controller (left, right, up, down, and diagonals).
In addition to joystick controllers, the Stelladaptor also automatically recognizes the Atari 2600 paddle and driving controllers. To take advantage of these controllers, software running on the host computer (such as emulators or games) must be updated to accurately handle the data being sent by the Stelladaptor. We have worked closely with the authors of several emulators to add native Stelladaptor support (see below).
Stelladaptor will work with any emulators that support standard USB controllers. Paddle controllers will only work in emulators that allow configuration of analog USB controllers (such as MAME32 and MacMAME), or emulators that have been updated to directly support the Stelladaptor (such as Stella or z26).
The following emulators have been tested to work with the Stelladaptor. Any emulators that support USB controllers should work with the Stelladaptor, but the following are emulators we either have personal experience with or that have been modified to include additional Stelladaptor support.
|Stella||Windows, OS X, Linux||Atari 2600 Emulator. Includes native support for Joysticks, Paddles, and Driving Controllers|
|z26||Windows||Atari 2600 Emulator. Includes native support for Joysticks, Paddles, and Driving Controllers|
|MAME||Windows||Arcade Emulator. Supports Joysticks and Paddle Controllers|
|MAME OS X||OS X||Arcade Emulator. Supports Joysticks and Paddle Controllers|
|Atari800MacX||OS X||Atari 5200 and 8-bit Computers Emulator. Supports Joysticks and Paddle Controllers|
This is just a small sampling of emulators that work with the Stelladaptor.
You can download a PDF version of the Stelladaptor manual here. This manual contains technical informatoin on how to add Stelladaptor support to emulators.
"This is superb! Works a treat too daisy chained to the OneSwitch.org.uk disability switch interface for retro machines. This enables disabled people to use Atari controllers alongside plug in separate switches or sensors, making play easier. Great stuff AtariAge!" - Barrie Ellis
"I've been waiting for someone to release a device like this and was glad to see someone finally did. Great product as it worked straight out-of-the-box for StellaX, Atari800Win, and MAME32 under Windows XP. If you enjoy the occasional classic game, go ahead and treat yourself by getting one of these. It completes the emulation experience and is well worth the price." - James Payton
"If you are looking to play some of the "old school" games on your modern PC, and want to play them the way they were meant to be played, this is the device for you. My personal enjoyment of the classic game emulators, and the commercial classic game compilations has increased dramatically since I started using the Stelladaptor. Playing Space Invaders or Ms. Pac-Man works OK with a PC joypad, but using the real Atari joystick makes the gaming experience so much more fun." - Mike Stulir
